I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time yesterday. It felt kinda risque and naughty watching it here in the conservative capital of the world.

Hi,

I’ll be acting as a proxy for my friend Abdulrahman, we live in Saudi Arabia where the law allows up to 4 wives to a single man.

Abdulrahman has 11 Brothers and 13 sisters. 5 of them from his mother.

I’ll be translating the questions to him and replying back in English (obviously).

Proof: http://i.imgur.com/o9MKV.jpg A photo of the passports for everyone in my house, which includes me my mother and my 5 siblings.

I find this thread so fascinating cause my family and I have lived in Saudi Arabia, my dad still lives there and I continue to visit him there once or twice every year and even with all the time spent there, Saudi culture is still so obscure and impenetrable to me.  My dad has Saudi Arabian friends, colleagues and business contacts and just as one would expect, they’re very mysterious, lol. I’m drawn to and very curious about conservative and veiled (no pun intended) cultures and religions of the world so reading something like this is a real treat. I had the opportunity to go to a middle-class Saudi Arabian wedding last year and that was a really interesting experience. I should blog about that sometime.

Saudi Arabia threatens to stop cooperation with USA if Palestinian Statehood is vetoed

jonathan-cunningham:

Saudi Arabia threatens to stop cooperation with USA if Palestinian Statehood is vetoed

The United States must back a Palestinian bid for UN recognition of statehood or risk becoming “toxic” in the Arab world and forcing a split with ally Saudi Arabia, a top Saudi diplomat warned Monday.

If Washington imposes its veto when the Palestinians seek to become the 194th member state of the United Nations then “Saudi Arabia would no longer be able to cooperate with America in the same way it historically has,” former Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Turki al-Faisal wrote.

He warned in a commentary in the The New York Times that a US veto would see American influence decline, “Israeli security undermined and Iran will be empowered, increasing the chances of another war in the region.”

"The ‘special relationship’ between Saudi Arabia and the United States would increasingly be seen as toxic by the vast majority of Arabs and Muslims, who demand justice for the Palestinian people."

Saudi leaders would be forced therefore to “adopt a more independent and assertive regional policy,” he warned, pointing to such incidents as Riyadh’s recent military intervention in Bahrain.

The US has historically supported the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, but the Saudi’s are a powerful Ally in the region. Will their objection be enough to sway US policy?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Went to my dad’s friend Nashat’s place for dinner tonight. We hadn’t seen them in about a year or so and I was looking forward to seeing his wife Ala’a and his two adorable daughters Lamar and Lillian. :)

They’ve gotten so much bigger and taller since we saw them last summer! Seriously, how cute are they? Looks can be deceiving with them though; they were a handful and then some. :P I’m not a fan of kids normally but I can’t resist these two, specially Lamar (the younger chubbier one). :D

I felt so bad when we were about to leave because Lillian grabbed her own little abhaya, started crying and demanded she get to go home with us for a sleepover at our place. I had such a nice time tonight and I for sure will be trying out the recipe for Ala’a’s homemade ice cream cake. :)

Shopping in Saudi Arabia: Jumpsuits! c/o H&M

(Sorry for the awful picture quality, I used my laptop cam. Also I’ve blurred out the background cause it’s all just clothes, boxes and suitcases and just a totally embarrassing mess.)

This is the first time I’ve ever bought a jumpsuit and I ended up buying two! I’m so pleased with both. I’m also honestly a bit surprised because I really need to try something on before buying but here in Saudi, there are no changerooms, and you’re not exactly allowed to try things on unless they’re things you could just put on top of your abhaya but even that isn’t permitted in some stores. Anywho, I winged it and hoped the sizes I picked would fit and lo and behold they both fit like a glove. :)

The black jumpsuit was on sale for 80 SAR which is roughly $20 CAD! STEAL OR WHAT??

The olive green one was 109 SAR which turns out to about $28 CAD! Savvy shoppin’ y’all, savvy shoppin’ ;).

(I am a US/CAN size 10, if any of you are wondering for reference)

I also picked up a few accessories; a braided leather hairband (H&M) and Feather earrings (Aldo Accessories).

I’ve tried two different hairstyles for the olive green jumpsuit. Let me know what y’all think :D

So it’s my Dad’s birthday today y’all.
He lives in Saudi Arabia and he’s been there for 25yrs+. He’s celebrated many birthdays alone there by himself and I feel pretty crummy about that but these are among the cons of him living there. Ammi, my brother and I wished him on the phone this morning but it’s pretty shitty knowing he’s alone there. Tonight (over there, last night) he went out with his friend for dinner. Anyone that’s been to Saudi knows that the food is freaking out of this world so that’s a plus, lol. :) Anyway, we’ll throw him a big bash with all his family/friends when he comes to Toronto in May and hopefully he’ll like that. :)
Happy Birthday Thathi! :D
